Relief of Intractable Knee Pain Due to Severe Osteoarthritis
Osteoarthritis affects nearly 30 million people in this country, and the knee is the most common site. Both color Doppler imaging as well as angiography can define overly abundant blood vessels particularly along the medial aspect of the knee joint in severe osteoarthritis. Particle embolization of the artery extending to this region, the medial geniculate artery, has been found to significantly relieve pain and possibly delay the timing for required knee replacement surgery. Also, embolization may provide a beneficial treatment option for those patients with A-fib who can little afford being taken off stroke-preventing anti coagulation medication to allow open knee surgery.
